BALTIMORE,  MD - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team fell 6-5 to Rutgers-Camden in its first game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships. Rutgers-Camden earned the victory thanks to a ninth-inning rally that saw the Scarlet Raptors score three times to steal the regional victory.
Ayush Krishnappa and
Ian Oehlschlaeger each reached base four times for the Engineers. Krishnappa had four hits in five at-bats and Oehlschlaeger logged three hits and drew a walk while producing a team-high three RBI.
Two of Oehlschlaeger's hits left the park, including a solo shot in the top of the first inning to give the Engineers the early momentum.
Rutgers-Camden scratched together a run in the bottom of the first to tie things at 1-1 before
Jon Primerano's two-run home run put RPI ahead 3-1 in the third.
Oehlschlaeger smashed his second long ball of the afternoon, a two-run blast, in the top of the sixth.
After RPI starter
Liam Riordan persevered through 5.0 innings,
Cameron Heuer allowed just two baserunners in 3.0 innings of work out of the bullpen to quiet the Rutgers-Camden lineup in the middle frames.
The Engineers led 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, however a quick-developing thunderstorm forced a 90-minute rain delay with three outs remaining.
Once play resumed, Rutgers-Camden strung together three runs courtesy of two hit batters, a walk, and a double to win the game.
RPI will next match up with Farmingdale State, who had lost to host Johns Hopkins 19-7 in the first game of the weekend regional. First pitch is set for 11:00 am tomorrow morning.
