TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team was dealt a narrow 1-0 defeat in its season opener this afternoon in ECAV Stadium.
The game's lone goal came in the 35th minute, when Suffolk's Lily Goldmann deposited a free kick off the foot of Annabel Veale to put the Rams in front.
RPI generated several quality looks in the second half, including attempts from
Sophia Byron,
Rachel Borra, and
Micaela Ross, but none found the target. The Engineers also had the edge in corner kicks, 5-1, but Suffolk's defense, led by goalkeeper Jaiden Wilds, kept the sheet clean.
Audrey Montero turned away two shots in goal for RPI, including a key stop early in the second half to keep the contest within reach.
The Engineers are back in action Sunday, as RPI will welcome Plattsburgh to ECAV Stadium for a 3:00 pm tilt.
