Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team turned in a dominant showing at the Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College at the HWS Tennis Center, claiming multiple bracket titles across singles and doubles play while earning more match victories than any other participating program.
Highlighting the Engineers' performance was a championship match sweep in the A Singles Draw, with
Gauri Muliyil capturing the title after defeating teammate
Nicole Ridenour in the final. Muliyil won three matches en route to the championship, dropping only six total games in the round of 16 and quarterfinals before earning an 8-3 win.
Also in the A bracket,
Kayla Wheeler captured the A Draw consolation title, rebounding from an opening-round loss to win three straight matches, capped by an 8-2 win in the consolation final. In B Singles,
Juliette Ceas earned the bracket title behind an undefeated weekend. Ceas posted three straight victories, including an 8-7 (7-5) semifinal win.
Rounding out the Engineers' singles success,
Neha Saraswatula was the C Draw Singles Champion, going 4-0 with wins over players from Rochester, Union, and St. Lawrence. She clinched the title with a hard-fought 8-6 win in the championship match.
In doubles play, the Engineers picked up additional hardware. Muliyil and Saraswatula teamed up to win the B Doubles Draw, not dropping more than one game in any of their three matches, including a dominant 6-1 win over a Rochester pairing in the final.
Additionally, the team of
Juliette Ceas and
Kaaviya Kannan won the A Draw Consolation bracket. After a first-round loss, the duo rebounded with three straight victories, including a 6-3 win in the consolation championship over St. Lawrence.
RPI was the only team in the field to win titles in all three singles draws and also captured two bracket championships in doubles. Other participating institutions included Rochester, RIT, Ithaca, Union, St. Lawrence, and William Smith.
The Engineers will look to carry the momentum of this weekend into a Friday dual meet at Merrimack College.
