TROY, N.Y. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team generated consistent offensive pressure and controlled the faceoff circle, however visiting Minnesota State capitalized on an early power-play goal and never looked back to earn a 3-0 decision tonight in Houston Field House.
RPI fired 30 shots on goal compared to 25 by the visitors.
Kendal Davidson paced all players with eight shots on frame, while
Nina Christof and
Charlotte Wensley each added four. Goaltender
Reese Keating kept the Engineers in striking distance with 22 saves, including 14 in the final period.
The Engineers out-dueled the Mavericks at the dot as well, winning 39-of-59 faceoffs, included
Sabrina Beaudoin's 21 wins in 29 chances. Junior
Georgia Bailey also contributed a strong effort with 12 wins on 18 attempts.
RPI generated multiple scoring chances on the power play, particularly during an extended 5-on-3 advantage in the first period. Wensley, Davidson, Christof, and
Sophia Jones, all tested Minnesota State goaltender Hailey Hansen during the sequence, but the Mavericks' netminder turned aside every opportunity.
Minnesota State opened the scoring late in the first on a power-play tally and later sealed the result with a pair of empty-net goals in the final two minutes.
The Engineers will have a chance to regroup quickly as they continue their season-opening weekend tomorrow at 3pm against the Mavericks.
