TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team fell 2-1 to visiting Plattsburgh State tonight at ECAV Stadium. The Engineers struck early in the first half, but a pair of second-half goals by the Cardinals proved to be the difference.
RPI opened the scoring in the 16th minute when
Thomas Corcoran converted on a low shot following a pinpoint assist from
Joshua Jarden, giving the home side a 1-0 advantage. The Engineers maintained pressure throughout the first half, outshooting Plattsburgh 6-1 and earning a pair of corner kicks, but could not extend their lead before the break.
The Cardinals responded after halftime, leveling the score in the 52nd minute as Gabriel Moscheni finished off a feed from Mariano Marra. Momentum continued to shift toward Plattsburgh, who took a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute thanks to a goal from Alex Guevara, set up by Jake McGowan.
Despite generating six corner kicks and registering nine total shots in the contest, including five on goal, RPI was unable to find an equalizer. Jarden and
Christopher McKinney led the offensive effort with a combined five shots and three shots on target.
Landon Bradley and
Sam Shmukler also contributed attempts on goal for the Engineers. RPI finished the night with a 9-4 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in corners.
The Engineers will next prepare for Saturday's Liberty League opener at RIT. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm in Rochester.
