Jarden's Late Equalizer Helps RPI Earn Draw at RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A dramatic late goal from Joshua Jarden helped the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team secure a 2-2 draw at RIT this afternoon in the Liberty League opener at Tiger Stadium. The Engineers opened the scoring in the first half and battled through a tense final 15 minutes to earn the result on the road.

RPI took a 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute when Matt Schlotterbeck headed home the game's first goal off an Engineer free kick. Owen Schnur provided the service on the play, helping the Engineers take the lead into halftime. The Engineers outshot the Tigers 6-5 in the first 45 minutes, with both teams placing a single shot on goal.

The Tigers responded with increasing pressure in the second half, eventually pulling level in the 78th minute when Idriss Diallo scored unassisted to make it 1-1. RIT then took the lead in the 88th minute through Roman Mironenko, who converted a pass from Adrian Sobczak.

Just seconds later, RPI answered. In the 89th minute, Jarden deposited RPI's second goal on a set piece, as he touched home a Schlotterbeck attempt off the crossbar to tie the game at 2-2.

In total, RPI recorded 10 shots with five on goal, while RIT finished with 13 shots, also putting five on frame. Schlotterbeck and Jarden each finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Engineers offensively. Sam Shmukler and Andy Palm also recorded shots on target for RPI, and goalkeeper Noah Churchill made three saves in the full 90 minutes.

Schlotterbeck played all 90 minutes along with fellow defenders Noah Gregory, Kedy Nana, and Owen Filler, helping RPI withstand eight RIT corner kicks and numerous surges in the final third.

The Engineers will continue league play with a 2:00 pm home contest against Union.
