WORCESTER, Mass. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team opened its 2025 campaign with a dominant 26-9 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in the annual Transit Trophy game on Friday night at Alumni Stadium. With the win, Rensselaer has now claimed the rivalry trophy for the fifth consecutive season.
The Engineers took control early, jumping out to a 16-0 lead in the second quarter and never trailing in the contest. RPI led by 13 at the half and added a touchdown and field goal in the second half to pull away from its non-league counterpart in the 117th meeting of the regional rivalry.
RPI's defense stood tall throughout the game, limiting WPI to just 227 total yards and only five third-down conversion on 17 attempts. Offensively, the Engineers racked up 315 yards, including 140 yards on the ground.
RPI quarterback
Anthony DeMatteo tallied 175 yards in the air on 13-of-22 passing. DeMatteo connected with
Kayden White for a 69-yard touchdown in the second quarter, marking the longest play of the game for either side. White totaled three touchdowns on the night, as the running back also found pay dirt on a pair of rushing scores from two yards out.
The Engineers will next challenge Utica College in a 6:00 pm road contest next Saturday night,
