ONEONTA, N.Y. – A late first-half goal from junior forward
Genevieve Ricci was the difference on Sunday afternoon as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout win at SUNY Oneonta in non-league action at Red Dragon Field.
Ricci netted the game-winner in the 45th minute, capitalizing on a feed from
Annabelle Bachhuber to put the Engineers in front just before halftime. The play was generated off a series of attacking opportunities that included two corner kicks and multiple shots in the final 10 minutes of the opening half. Bachhuber threaded a pass into space, and Ricci finished from inside the box to tally her first of the season.
RPI held a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half and out shot Oneonta 11-8 overall, with six shots on target. Ricci led all players with four shots, including two on goal and the eventual game-winner.
Delaney McMorris and
Rachel Borra each added efforts on frame for the Engineers, who also had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
In goal,
Audrey Montero made four saves before a red card in the 71st minute ended her afternoon early. First-year goalkeeper
Ava Gaboury entered in relief and turned away two shots in the final 19 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. RPI's back line, anchored by
Greta Heldman,
Sophia Byron, and
Delaney McMorris, held firm under pressure as the hosts pressed for an equalizer in the closing stages.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, September 17 , when they travel to VTSU Castleton for another non-league road test. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
