HAMDEN, Conn. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team erased late deficits twice and forced overtime, but ultimately fell 4–3 to Quinnipiac University tonight at M&T Bank Arena, as the #8 nationally-ranked Bobcats netted the sudden-death winner at 4:43 of overtime.
RPI struck first midway through the opening period when defenseman
Kazimier Sobieski opened the scoring at 4:46, jumping into the rush and finishing an even-strength chance off a setup from
Cole Gordon. The Engineers carried the 1–0 edge through the remainder of the period behind steady play from freshman goaltender
Nate Krawchuk, who turned aside all eight shots he faced in the frame.
Quinnipiac responded with two goals in a 26-second span midway through the second period to take a 2–1 lead, but RPI answered early in the third. Just 60 seconds in,
Rainers Rullers redirected a feed from
Tyler Wallace and Sobieski to knot the game at 2–2, marking Rullers' fourth goal of the season.
The Bobcats regained the lead late in regulation at 18:10, but the Engineers showed resilience once again. With the extra attacker on,
Matthew Buckley buried the equalizer with 14 seconds remaining, finishing a sequence of assists from Sobieski and
Luciano Wilson to force overtime.
In the extra session, both teams traded chances before Quinnipiac ended the contest on a rush chance at 4:43, sealing the 4–3 decision. Krawchuk finished with 21 saves, including several key stops during third-period penalty kills to keep RPI within reach.
RPI continues league play back home in Houston Field House next weekend, beginning with a 7:00 pm matchup versus Yale on Friday night.
