SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team grounded out a 56–50 road win over league-leading Union this afternoon.
PJ Scalisi led the Engineers with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while
Billy Feeks and
Andrew Deppe added 12 apiece. Deppe stuffed the sheet with seven boards, five steals, and three assists additionally.
Kellen Driscoll chipped in nine points and four rebounds as RPI finished +4 on the glass (34–30) and shot 90.9% at the stripe (10–11).
Tied 28–28 at the break, the Engineers began to take control when Driscoll opened the half with a jumper, Scalisi finished at the rim, and Deppe drilled a right-wing three to help RPI build a 35–28 cushion.
Union answered from deep to trim it to one, but RPI steadied behind paint touches and timely stops. Scalisi's lane finishes twice rebuilt two-possession leads, and after the Garnet Chargers briefly went ahead 44–43 with 4:17 left, Driscoll's jumper flipped it back before a Scalisi block ignited a Feeks fast-break layup to put RPI up 47–44.
In the final two minutes, Feeks converted a layup and a free throw to make it 50–46 and Scalisi hit two clutch free throws with 1:30 remaining.
Yechiel Stewart knocked down two more with under 20 ticks remaining and Scalisi sealed it with two more free throws in the final seconds to cap a 56–50 finish.
RPI held Union to 34.6% shooting overall and just 28 points in both halves.
The Engineers next host Hobart at 7:30 pm on Friday.
