PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team responded quickly after surrendering the opening goal and never looked back, skating to a 3–1 ECAC Hockey victory over Brown tonight in Meehan Auditorium.
Brown opened the scoring at 7:07 of the first period, but the Engineers answered less than two minutes later.
Dovar Tinling evened the contest at 1–1, finishing an even-strength opportunity off a strong feed from
Kazimier Sobieski.
The Engineers seized control midway through the opening frame when
Jagger Tapper delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal at 13:03. Tapper created the chance himself, capitalizing on an unassisted play to give RPI a 2–1 lead.
RPI continued to press, earning a five-minute major power play later in the period and generating sustained pressure, but Brown's penalty kill kept the deficit at one.
After a scoreless second period, RPI leaned on strong defensive structure and timely faceoff wins in the third. Brown pulled its goaltender late in regulation and
Tyler Wallace sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:45, assisted by Tinling.
Filip Sitar was exceptional at the dot, winning 16-of-19 draws, while
Rainers Rullers (8 wins) and
Alfred Lindberg (8 wins) added depth in the circle.
In goal,
Nate Krawchuk earned the win with 24 saves, turning aside 11 second-period shots and keeping Brown scoreless over the final 52 minutes.
With the victory, RPI improves to 10–22–1 overall and 7–13–1 in ECAC Hockey, carrying momentum into the day of the regular season, which will feature a 7:00 pm matchup for the Engineers at Yale.
