CANTON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team generated three second-period goals but fell 7–3 at St. Lawrence University tonight in Appleton Arena.
Jagger Tapper paced the Engineers with a goal and two assists, while
Kazimier Sobieski and
Alfred Lindberg also found the back of the net in the road contest.
St. Lawrence jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the opening five and a half minutes, scoring at 2:05 and 5:32 of the first period.
The Engineers answered early in the second period. At 6:46, Sobieski jumped into space and snapped home an even-strength goal off feeds from Tapper and Lindberg to cut the deficit to 2–1.
After a short-handed goal by the Saints restored a two-goal cushion, RPI responded again as Tapper scored unassisted at 10:53, winning a puck battle and finishing from the slot to make it 3–2.
St. Lawrence countered at two minutes later with what proved to be the game-winning goal, but RPI continued to battle and pulled back within one late in the frame.
Less under two minutes left in the frame, Lindberg finished an even-strength chance from Tapper to bring the Engineers within 4–3 heading into the second intermission.
The Saints added three more scores in the third, including an empty-netter to seal the win.
The Engineers return hime to host #9 Cornell on Friday at 7:00 pm.
