FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision at Mary Washington this afternoon at Dickinson Stadium.
RPI manufactured its first run in the third to tie the game at 1-1.
Cam Hawley drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a
Charlie Morse sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a
Robbie Reddington single, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Matt Chotiner.
The Engineers pulled even again an inning later.
Alex Coombes singled to left and moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice that included a throwing error. Hawley then delivered an RBI single to plate Coombes, and RPI took a 3-2 lead moments later when Reddington lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home
Danny Nayvelt.
Mary Washington answered quickly, capitalizing on defensive miscues to regain control. The Eagles tied the game in the fifth, then pushed across three runs in the sixth, two of them unearned, to open a 7-3 advantage. A two-base hit and a pair of doubles helped set up additional damage in the sixth, and Mary Washington added insurance in the seventh and two more in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Hawley led the RPI offense, reaching base four times with a hit and three walks while driving in a run.
Mike Nelson started struck out four over 5.1 innings.
RPI will take Monday off before facing Guilford College on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm in Greensboro, NC.
