TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team earned a 10-3 non-conference win over MCLA on Tuesday afternoon at Robison Baseball Field, using a six-run third inning to break the game open.
RPI wasted no time getting on the board in the first, as Michael Lebenson walked, stole second, and then stole home during a double-steal sequence after Alex Coombes reached with a single and swiped second base.
The Engineers blew the game open in the third. Walker Abdallah was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored when Lebenson launched a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0. RPI kept the inning rolling with back-to-back walks to Ben Belliss and Stephen Koval, and after another free pass to Andrew Crux loaded the bases, Charlie Morse ripped a two-run double down the right-field line. Luke Anderson followed with an RBI single to cap the frame and give the Engineers a 6-0 cushion.
RPI added on in the fifth, as Morse singled and Jack Mullins dropped down a bunt single, and after both runners swiped a bag, Abdallah delivered a two-run single up the middle to push the lead to 8-0.
Lebenson provided the finishing touch in the seventh, as Abdallah singled to set the table and Lebenson crushed his second two-run homer of the day to extend the advantage to 10-0.
MCLA broke through for three runs in the eighth, but RPI's staff limited the damage and finished the job, with Sam Ferrier working a scoreless ninth to close out the victory.
Lebenson powered the offense with a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored. Abdallah added two hits, two RBI, and two runs, while Morse went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Coombes finished 2-for-5, and Anderson drove in a run with the third-inning single.
Dylan Chan earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and the bullpen combined to keep MCLA off the scoreboard until the eighth. Mike Nelson started with two clean innings, and Davis McCollister struck out three in a scoreless frame out of the bullpen during the middle innings.
RPI returns to Liberty League play on Friday at home against Skidmore.
