TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team continued its unbeaten start to Liberty League play today, defeating Skidmore 6-4 at Robison Baseball Field.
Skidmore struck first with three runs in the top of the opening inning, using a two-run double and an RBI single to grab an early 3-0 lead, but RPI answered immediately in the bottom half. Walker Abdallah worked a leadoff walk and Michael Lebenson ripped an RBI double to left-center to put the Engineers on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.
RPI continued to chip away in the fourth with hustle and pressure on the bases. Charlie Morse dropped down a bunt single, advanced on a wild pitch, then stole third before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 3-2.
The comeback continued in the fifth. Ben Belliss was hit by a pitch and Andrew Crux followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.
RPI took control in the seventh with a decisive two-run frame. Lebenson drew a walk, stole second, and moved to third on Cam Hawley's sacrifice bunt before Belliss delivered a go-ahead RBI single down the left field line for a 4-3 lead. Moments later, Matt Chotiner singled and Morse lined an RBI single through the left side to bring home Belliss and extend the advantage to 5-3.
Lebenson provided the final insurance in the eighth, blasting a solo homer to right-center, his third homer in the last two games, to push the margin to 6-3. Skidmore scratched across one run in the ninth on a fielding error, but Zac Zajac induced a game-ending double play to seal the win.
Lebenson led the Engineers offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and the home run while driving in two and scoring twice. Belliss added a go-ahead RBI single and scored twice, and Crux and Morse each produced two-hit afternoons with an RBI apiece.
RPI starter Garrett Gates struck out five batters while allowing just the two first inning two hits in his four frames on the mound.
Andrew Gaughan earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, Sam Ferrier tossed 2.0 shutout frames to bridge the middle innings, and Zajac notched his third save, which featured a game-ending double play with the potential tying run in scoring position.
RPI and Skidmore will wrap their three-game series with a Sunday doubleheader in Saratoga Springs.
