Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute proudly celebrates 50 years of women's varsity athletics—a milestone that reflects decades of progress, achievement, and opportunity for generations of student-athletes. What began as a commitment to expanding access in intercollegiate athletics has grown into a vibrant and competitive tradition that continues to shape the RPI community today.
Over the past five decades, RPI's women's varsity programs have become a cornerstone of the Institute's athletic identity. Competing at a high level across a wide range of sports, these teams have consistently demonstrated excellence not only in competition, but also in the classroom and throughout the community. This legacy is built on the dedication of student-athletes, the leadership of coaches and administrators, and the continued support of alumni and fans. Along the way, there have been countless milestones worth celebrating—from the 40th anniversary of Women's Soccer this year, to the historic five-overtime women's ice hockey game against Quinnipiac in 2010, to four NCAA Tournament appearances by the softball program. Each one of these milestones is paving the way for future student-athletes.
Guided by dedicated coaches and staff, each program has prioritized the holistic development of its student-athletes, fostered a strong sense of community and ensured that RPI women's athletics is defined not just by wins and losses, but by leadership, character, and integrity. Over the past 50 years, more than 40 women have been inducted into the RPI Athletics Hall of Fame—a testament to the lasting impact of those who have excelled at the highest level. Still, these honorees represent only a fraction of the outstanding student-athletes who have shaped the program and paved the way for future generations to build upon this proud tradition.
To commemorate this year's historic milestone, RPI Athletics hosted a special luncheon this past October featuring Carole Stiff, a nationally recognized leader in women's sports and a longtime advocate for equity in athletics. The event served as an opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future of women's athletics at RPI. There were roughly 80 attendees at the event, including alumni, community members, former coaches, current coaches and their student athletes. To read more about this event, please click

Over the next week, RPI Athletics will release a series of commemorative videos across its social media platforms throughout the week. Each video will highlight an individual team, featuring the perspectives of a coach, a current student-athlete, and an alumna. These stories will showcase the unique history and impact of each program while emphasizing the shared values that define women's athletics at RPI. In addition, a special video message from Athletic Director Dr. Bowers will be released on Tuesday, March 31, offering gratitude to those who paved the way and excitement for the continued success of the Institute's women's athletics programs. Check out the RPI Athletics
Instagram to watch all the videos.
Fans, alumni, and supporters are encouraged to follow along on social media and engage with these stories as they are shared. The
full schedule for RPI's women's varsity teams is available on the RPI Athletics website, where visitors can find game times, locations, and additional information for each program.
As RPI marks this 50-year milestone, the Institute celebrates not only the accomplishments of the past, but also the momentum that continues to drive its women's varsity athletics programs forward.
