Engineers Stay Hot, Improve to 6-0 in Liberty League

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team stayed perfect in Liberty League play, sweeping a conference doubleheader at Skidmore with an 11-3 win in the opener followed by a 6-1 victory at Ferrari Field.

RPI took control early in game one with a four-run third inning. Charlie Lapp jump-started the rally by drawing a walk and scoring on Michael Lebenson's RBI double, and the inning continued as Alex Coombes reached on an error that brought home Lebenson. Ben Belliss kept the pressure on with a single, and Matt Chotiner followed with a two-run single to give the Engineers a 4-0 cushion.

Skidmore got on the board in the sixth, but the Engineers responded immediately and created separation with a three-run answer in the top half. Andrew Crux singled and Charlie Morse laid down a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an error, and after both runners moved into scoring position with a double steal, Jack Mullins punched a two-run single through the right side. Walker Abdallah followed with an RBI single to make it 7-0.

RPI continued to add on late, highlighted by a two-run home run from Lebenson in the eighth and an RBI double off the bat of Danny Nayvelt in the ninth to push the margin to 11-1 before Skidmore scored twice in the bottom of the ninth.

Lebenson powered the opener, finishing 2-for-2 with the home run and three RBI while reaching base four times, and Crux delivered a two-hit day and scored twice. Mullins supplied two RBI in his pinch-hit opportunity, Chotiner drove in two in the decisive third inning, and Lapp scored twice while also collecting an extra-base hit.

Liam Riordan earned the win , and the bullpen bridged the final frames to finish off the eight-run victory.

Game two was a pitching-driven win that RPI controlled with timely extra-base hits and sharp execution. The Engineers opened the scoring in the third when Robbie Reddington singled and later scored on Belliss' sacrifice fly. RPI then broke the game open in the fifth, as Abdallah reached and scored on Nayvelt's RBI double before Belliss delivered a two-run double to make it 4-0.

Skidmore's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth, but RPI answered again in the sixth when Morse singled and Reddington followed with an RBI single to restore a four-run lead.

The Engineers tacked on one more in the ninth as Lebenson worked a walk, stole second, and came home on Chotiner's RBI triple to right-center to close out the 6-1 final.

Abdallah set the tone offensively in the nightcap, reaching base four times with two hits and two walks, while Nayvelt went 2-for-4 with the RBI double. Belliss drove in three to lead the way, and Reddington added two hits and an RBI.

Belliss also earned the win on the mound with 5.2 strong innings, and Sam Ferrier and Zac Zajac combined to lock down the final 3.1 frames to complete the sweep.

The Engineers will next face Williams at home on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm on Robison Field.
