TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team powered past Williams, 13-3, this afternoon at Robison Baseball Field, using a six-run fourth inning and a four-run eighth to pull away.
RPI struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when Walker Abdallah drew a leadoff walk, moved up on a groundout, and scored on Michael Lebenson's RBI double to left-center for a 1-0 lead.
The Engineers blew the game open in the fourth. Lebenson opened the frame with a double to right-center and Ben Belliss was hit by a pitch before Matt Chotiner lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Lebenson. A wild pitch brought in another run, and after Charlie Morse laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jack Mullins punched an RBI single up the middle. Charlie Lapp followed with a single, and Abdallah capped the inning with a two-run double to left to make it 7-0.
RPI added on again in the sixth as Belliss singled through the left side and Chotiner launched a two-run homer to right for his first long ball of the season, pushing the advantage to 9-0.
Williams tacked on a run in the eighth, but the Engineers responded immediately with four in the bottom half. A walk to Stephen Koval and another free pass to Alex Coombes set the table, and after Connor Dynan walked to load the bases, two runs scored on a fielding error. Abdallah then delivered again with a two-run single through the right side to extend the lead to 13-1.
Abdallah paced the Engineers offensively, going 2-for-5 with a double, four RBI, two runs scored, and a walk, while Lebenson went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, a walk, and a run scored. Mullins drove in a run and scored twice, Belliss scored twice and recorded a hit, and Chotiner delivered three RBI on the sacrifice fly and the two-run homer.
Julian Fong-Mcadams set the tone with 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six. Seamus Kelly and Dylan Chan combined for three scoreless frames in relief, and the Engineers' staff limited Williams to four hits overall.
RPI next travels to Oneonta tomorrow for a single afternoon contest.
