Baseball Continues Longest Winning Streak Since 2009

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight games, its longest since a 17-game run in 2009, by blanking Oneonta 9-0 this afternoon at Red Dragon Field.

After four scoreless innings to open the day, the Engineers broke through in the fifth with a decisive four-run swing. Robbie Reddington worked a walk and Walker Abdallah reached on a fielder's choice before Connor Dynan punched a single to right to set the table. With the bases loaded, Ben Belliss delivered the game's biggest blow, launching a grand slam to put RPI in front 4-0.

RPI kept the pressure on in the sixth, turning the inning into three more runs. Alex Coombes singled, advanced on a wild pitch, then stole third and scored on a catcher error. Jack Mullins followed with a double to left-center, and Abdallah knocked him in with an RBI single before Dynan ripped an RBI double down the right-field line to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Engineers added two more in the ninth to close out the scoring. Abdallah was hit by a pitch and Dynan singled to put runners at the corners, and Jorge Hitlin came through off the bench with an RBI double down the left-field line. Matt Chotiner followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0.

Belliss powered the offense, finishing 1-for-4 with the four RBI on the grand slam, while Abdallah scored a team-high three runs and added two hits and an RBI. Dynan had a standout day at the top of the order, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI, and Hitlin added a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth.

RPI's pitching staff combined on a three-hit shutout, striking out 11. Mike Nelson started with three scoreless innings, and Andrew Crux earned the win with two clean frames in relief. Danny Nayvelt, Andrew Gaughan, Sam Ferrier, and Zac Zajac followed to finish off the shutout and preserve the streak.

RPI travels to Schenectady on Friday to start a weekend series with Union.
