TROY, NY — The RPI field hockey team scored five unanswered goals after the opening quarter and controlled play throughout a 6-1 victory over Russell Sage this evening at Harkness Field.
RPI opened the scoring in the first quarter when
Ella Pasquarelli finished a feed from
Katie Galgay. Russell Sage answered shortly thereafter on a goal from Sadee Short, leaving the teams even at 1-1 after the opening period.
The Engineers took control in the second quarter, generating 11 shots and seven penalty corners while holding Russell Sage without a shot.
Emily Dubord broke the tie off an assist from
Ria Patel to send RPI into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
RPI then broke the game open with three goals in the third quarter.
Emily Frey extended the lead with an unassisted tally before
Jianna Seale converted a setup from Dubord to make it 4-1.
Val Palmiotti added another goal from the penalty spot later in the quarter, giving the Engineers a four-goal cushion heading into the final period.
The Engineers continued to generate chances throughout the fourth, producing 12 more shots and seven penalty corners.
Monisha Preetham capped the scoring late in the contest with RPI's sixth goal of the evening.
Six different Engineers found the back of the cage in the victory. Dubord finished with a goal and an assist, while Pasquarelli, Frey, Seale, Palmiotti and Preetham each scored once. Galgay and Patel added assists.
Sophia Brown led RPI with eight shots, while Dubord and Frey recorded seven apiece and Patel added six. Galgay put all three of her attempts on goal, while Patel and Frey each placed four shots on target.
RPI finished with a commanding 40-5 advantage in shots, including a 23-1 edge in shots on goal, and held a 20-3 advantage in penalty corners.
