NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — The RPI women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games and remained unbeaten on the season with a 2-1 road victory over SUNY New Paltz this afternoon at South Turf Field.
Delaney McMorris and
Genevieve Ricci provided the goals for the Engineers, who improved to 4-0-2 while holding a 20-9 advantage in shots.
RPI took the lead less than 10 minutes into the contest, as McMorris found the back of the net for the opening goal. The Engineers continued to generate chances following the early tally, with
Ava Davey forcing a save before
Maddy Kaminski put another attempt on target later in the half.
The Engineers' depth continued to apply pressure after a wave of substitutions late in the opening period.
Allison Fleury tested New Paltz goalkeeper Jess Centeri shortly after entering the match, while
Isabelle Gelzhiser followed with another shot on goal in the closing minutes. RPI carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting the Hawks 8-4 and putting five attempts on target.
RPI wasted little time doubling its advantage following the break. Ricci scored just 1:44 into the second half to push the Engineers ahead 2-0.
The Engineers continued to threaten throughout the second half, producing 12 shots over the final 45 minutes. Fleury,
Annabelle Bachhuber, and Gelzhiser each forced saves as RPI looked to add to its advantage, while
Elsa Ryangenerated four second-half attempts.
New Paltz cut the deficit to 2-1 when Abby Macleod scored in the 84th minute, but RPI held off the late push to secure its fourth consecutive victory.
Ava Gaboury made a save on another Macleod attempt in the 88th minute to preserve the one-goal advantage through the final whistle.
Ryan led all RPI players with five shots, while
Micaela Ross, Kaminski, Fleury, Bachhuber and Gelzhiser each recorded two. The Engineers put 11 of their 20 attempts on goal, forcing Centeri to make nine saves. McMorris and Ricci each scored on their only shot on goal.
Hanna Pihu played the opening half in goal and made one save while keeping New Paltz off the scoreboard. Gaboury handled the final 45 minutes and recorded two saves. RPI finished with a 20-9 advantage in total shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.
