TROY, NY — The RPI field hockey team used a three-goal performance from
Sophia Brown and a balanced offensive attack to earn a 6-2 victory over New Paltz this evening at Harkness Field.
RPI grabbed control early behind a pair of first-quarter goals.
Kylie Secker opened the scoring before
Emily Frey doubled the advantage off an assist from
Ria Patel. The Engineers generated seven shots in the opening period while holding New Paltz without an attempt.
New Paltz responded in the second quarter, as Caydence Parker scored twice on corner opportunities to level the contest at 2-2. RPI quickly regained the momentum, however, with Brown scoring twice in succession late in the period to send the Engineers into halftime with a 4-2 advantage.
Brown continued her big night early in the third quarter, finishing a setup from
Emily Dubord to complete the hat trick and extend the lead to 5-2.
Katie Galgay followed with another RPI goal later in the period to push the margin to four.
The Engineers continued to control possession and create opportunities throughout the remainder of the contest. RPI produced three more shots in the fourth quarter while allowing New Paltz just one attempt, which
Megan Rice turned aside to preserve the 6-2 final.
Brown led the Engineers with three goals while placing all seven of her shots on target. Secker, Frey and Galgay each added a goal, while Patel and Dubord recorded assists. Patel finished with three shots on goal, Secker put two of her three attempts on target, and
Kennedy Campbell,
Ella Pasquarelli,
Lindsay Dunbar and Galgay each added a shot on goal.
RPI finished with a commanding 19-3 advantage in shots and a 17-3 edge in shots on goal, while also holding a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
