MADISON, N.J. — The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team battled back with a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw against Drew this afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
Maddy Kaminski scored in the closing minutes for the Engineers, who held a 16-7 advantage in shots.
RPI generated pressure almost immediately, as
Bethany Kim struck the woodwork just over a minute into the contest before
Elsa Ryan followed with another attempt moments later. The Engineers continued to create chances throughout the opening half, with
Clara Krumholz and
Annabelle Bachhuber each forcing saves from Drew goalkeeper Sarah Crowley. Bachhuber put two shots on target during the half as the teams went into the break scoreless.
Drew broke through less than a minute after halftime when Megan Fedish finished a feed from Sophia Lara to give the Rangers a 1-0 advantage.
RPI responded immediately with three shots in the ensuing minute, as
Genevieve Ricci,
Ava Davey, and Ryan each looked for a quick equalizer.
The Engineers continued to press as the second half progressed.
Allison Fleury put an attempt on goal in the 72nd minute, while Ricci and Ryan helped generate several chances during a sustained stretch of pressure late in the contest. RPI's persistence was rewarded when Kaminski found the back of the net with just over five minutes remaining, finishing a setup from Ryan to pull the Engineers even at 1-1.
Rensselaer continued to push after the equalizer, earning a corner kick and getting a final shot from
Delaney McMorris before the final whistle. The Engineers finished with a 10-3 advantage in second-half shots and outshot Drew 16-7 overall, while also holding a 5-3 edge in shots on goal and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Kaminski recorded two shots and RPI's lone goal, while Ryan finished with three attempts and the assist on the equalizer. Ricci also registered three shots, and Bachhuber put both of her attempts on target.
Ava Gaboury played the opening half in goal and made two saves to keep Drew scoreless through 45 minutes, while
Hanna Pihu handled the second half for the Engineers.
