Men's Hockey Welcomes Class of 2017

Three forwards, a defenseman and a goalie among those joining Engineers

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) head men's hockey coach Seth Appert has announced the team's Class of 2017. The group of five student-athletes includes three forwards, one defensemen and one goaltender. Four are from the United States and one hails from Canada.

"I am excited to welcome these five young men and their families to the RPI Hockey Family. They bring an important combination of talent, toughness, competitiveness and character to our program," said Appert. "This group will continue to push us in pursuit of ECAC & NCAA Championships while maintaining our tradition of academic and social excellence. I would like to thank assistant coaches Bryan Vines and Nolan Graham for their tireless efforts on the road, recruiting high quality young men and families to our program." 

Below is the list of Rensselaer's recruits with their 2012-13 regular season statistics, 2012-13 playoff statistics (where applicable and available) and a quote from Appert:

FORWARDS:

Riley Bourbonnais (5-10, 190) from Rochester, NY/Lincoln Stars (USHL)
• 63 regular season games … 25 goals and 24 assists for 49 points … 46 penalty minutes.
• Three playoff games … Zero goals and three assists for three points … Four penalty minutes.
"Riley brings two years of USHL experience where he produced offense at a high level.  His stick skill, strength on the puck and offensive playmaking ability give him the opportunity to be valuable contributor at both ends of the ice."

Jimmy DeVito (5-10, 165) Bloomington, IL/Lincoln Stars (USHL)
• 57 regular season games … Six goals and 14 assists for 20 points … 113 penalty minutes.
"Jimmy brings over 150 games of USHL experience while earning valuable experience along the way.  He is intelligent, skilled and very tough to play against.  His intelligence and toughness is a very important combination for our program."

Jake Wood (5-7, 160) from Georgetown, ON/Lincoln Stars (USHL)
• 60 regular season games … 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points … 151 penalty minutes.
"Jake plays a style that will endear him to the RPI faithful while aggravating opponents.  He is fast, skilled and tough while playing a relentless attacking style of play that we value in our program."

DEFENSEMAN:

Parker Reno (6-1, 190) Edina, MN/Edina High School
• 31 regular season games played … Two goals and 22 assists for 24 points.
"Parker is an elite skating defenseman who captained his Edina High School team earning his second State Championship. He combines the skating ability, hockey intelligence, and competitiveness to become a top college defenseman."

GOALTENDER:

Jake Soffers (6-0, 165) Potomac, MD/Boston Bandits (EJHL)
• 29 regular season games … Had a 9-14-2 record … Compiled a 2.64 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.
"Jake had a very good year for the Boston Bandits.  He is a competitive goaltender with a work ethic to help build depth for our program at that position."
