Jared Wilson, a freshman defenseman on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team, has been chosen as the Rookie of the Week in ECAC Hockey, it has been announced. He is the third member of the Engineers to be recognized thus far this season.
Wilson, a native of Calgary, Alb., recorded two points from the blueline in a pair of ECAC Hockey home games. In a 3-1 win over Princeton University on Friday night, he scored the game-winning goal with a power play tally. He also had a game-high four shots with an even plus-minus rating. The next night against No. 20 Quinnipiac University, Wilson had the primary assist on RPI's only goal, an even strength marker, early in the first period. He finished with two shots and a plus-1 rating in the Engineers' 3-1 loss.
In 11 games this season, the former Vernon Vipers standout has two goals with one assist for three points. He leads the team's defensemen in goals and is tied for the team lead in points by blue-liners. Both of Wilson's goals have been game-winners. He has been assessed five penalties for 18 minutes.
The Engineers are 5-7-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the league. They play a non-league game at UConn tonight at 7pm at the XL Center in Hartford.
