SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior
Alexa Gruschow scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team played to a 2-2 tie at Union College. With the draw, the Engineers are now 4-17-4 overall (2-10-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Dutchwomen are 4-17-4 (1-11-1 ECAC Hockey).
The hosts got the scoring started at 9:12 of the opening period, when junior Jessica Kaminsky (La Salle, MB/Fort Richmond) stuck home a rebound at the right of the cage for her third of the season. The power play tally was assisted by senior captain Christine Valente (West Haven, CT/Rosemary Hall) and junior Lizzy Otten (Edina, MN/Edina).
Gruschow (Mechanicsburg, PA/Washington Pride) drew RPI even (1-1) 23 seconds into the second, sweeping home a shot from close range. Freshman
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/Assabet Valley) and sophomore
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lightning) notched the helpers.
Union regained the lead at 14:19 of the second stanza, on a shot from the left circle by senior Alex Tancrell-Fontaine (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich). Once again on the power play, the Dutchwomen worked the puck to the point for Tancrell-Fontaine, who beat RPI senior goaltender
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) inside the left post.
Horwood netted the game-tying goal at 10:14 of the third, converting on a terrific passing play down low. Senior
Kathryn Schilter (Aurora, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) found Tomlinson along the goal line, who quickly snapped a pass across the face of goal to Horwood for th easy tap in.Â
The Engineers continued to pressure in the later stages of regulation and into overtime, but were unable to sneak a puck past Union senior netminder Shenae Lundberg (Peterborough, NH/Deerfield Academy), who recorded 24 saves, including 13 in the third period alone. O'Brien finished with 20 stops. RPI went 1 for 5 on the power play, while Union was 2 for 4.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at the Houston Field House (4pm).
