TROY, N.Y. --
Ali Svoboda scored a shorthanded goal just 1:23 into the third period for the Engineers, but Providence tallied two goals later in the stanza, as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and the Friars skated to a 3-3 tie in non-conference women's hockey action on Tuesday afternoon at Houston Field House. The Engineers now stand at 4-13-3 on the season, while Providence holds a 3-14-4 record.
RPI scored two first period goals to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH / Assabet Valley) scored her fourth goal of the season just 1:30 into play, taking a centering pass from
Jenn Godin (Clarence Center, NY / Tabor Academy).
Mariana Walsh (Walpole, MA / Assabet Valley) added the Engineers' second tally at 17:43, shooting the puck over Providence goaltender Sarah Bryant's right shoulder into the top corner of the net.
The Friars got on the board at 4:41 of the second, as Beth Hanrahan scored her first of two on the day for Providence, getting assists from Madison Sansone and Brooke Simpson. The 2-1 score held for the remainder of the period.
Rensselaer came out of the second intermission shorthanded, due to a late penalty in the second period, but Svoboda (Arlington Heights, IL / Chicago Mission) picked up the puck on a breakaway and found the back of the net. Providence pulled back to within a goal at 8:19 on a goal by Sansone, with an assist to Hanrahan, who would later score the equalizer. At 15:07, Hanrahan sent the puck through a defender's legs, where it found its way past
Brianna Piper (Oakville, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros).Â
Both teams had chances in the overtime period, including back-to-back breakaways in each direction, but neither team could capitalize in the five minutes of extra time.
Providence outshot RPI, 30-19, while the Engineers held a 28-24 advantage in faceoff wins. Piper recorded 27 saves between the pipes for Rensselaer, while Bryant stopped 16 opposing shots.
RPI will return to action on Friday, hosting Dartmouth in ECAC action at 7 p.m.
