TROY, N.Y. – Behind solid goaltending on each end of the field, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and SUNY Cobleskill battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw in non-conference action this evening. The Red Hawks are now 7-2-1 overall while the Fighting Tigers move to 4-2-1 on the season.
After battling through a scoreless first half, both teams picked up the tempo in the second stanza. Though Rensselaer held a slim 12-8 shot advantage, both squads had a number of chances to get on the board in the second stanza.
Cobleskill nearly took the lead after a nice cross from the left side reached the foot of freshman Aaron Gallusser (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) in the middle of the box. Despite getting past the RPI defense, his shot went wide of the net in the 69th minute.
One of the best chances for the homestanding Red Hawks came in the 76th minute when junior
Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) crossed the ball from the right side to classmate
Michael Long (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton). Fighting Tigers keeper Brad Johnson (New York, NY/Trinity Pawling) made the initial save on Long's shot but lost control of the ball and the Cobleskill defense battled to keep RPI away from the loose ball.
The overtime session saw the physical play on the field pick up as three yellow cards were issued in the final ten minute session. Cobleskill held a 2-1 shot advantage in each overtime frame. Sophomore Emile Barnett (Huntington, NY/John Glenn) nearly clinched the victory in the first extra session after fighting past the RPI defense on the right side, but his shot went wide of the net.
Rensselaer's best chance of the game came down to the 5th minute of the second overtime as Prom crossed the ball to freshman
Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) in front. Unable to settle the ball, Tambasco sent a quick shot that arched to high at the net, ricocheting off the crossbar.
In goal, sophomore
Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) stopped six shots for the Red Hawks, which held a 22-16 advantage in shots for the game. Johnson made eight stops in the tie for Cobleskill.
RPI returns to action on October 10 and 11 when it hosts Liberty League rivals St. Lawrence (4pm) and Clarkson (2pm), respectively. Live stats will be available at
