Engineers fall, 6-0

Box Score

TROY, N.Y. – Dan Meyers stopped all 25 shots he faced and Chris Davis scored twice to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 6-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Division I men's hockey game at the Houston Field House. UMass, which saw 12 players record at least one point, improves to 2-1-0. The Engineers fall to 0-4-0.

Meyers (Voorhees, NJ/Green Mountain Glades), a junior, made eight saves in the first period, nine in the second and eight in the third period to post his first career shutout. Rensselaer senior Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) stopped 29 shots on the other end, including 18 in the first period.

Davis (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) put the visitors ahead at 16:15 of the first period when he jammed in a loose puck from just outside the crease. Defenseman Douglas Kublin (Manlius, NY/New York Apple Core) doubled the lead at 18:38 when his shot from the high slot found the back of the net.

The score remained 2-0 until 16:14 of the second period when freshman Danny Hobbs (Shawville, PQ/Columbus Jr. Blue Jackets) scored on an odd-man rush soon after Rensselaer had sustained pressure in its offensive zone.

Davis, a junior, made the score 4-0 with his second goal of the game – and of the season – at 6:35 of the third period. An unassisted goal on a wrist shot that hit the inside of the goal post by Casey Wellman (Brentwood, CA/Cedar Rapids) just under three minutes later gave the Minutemen a 5-0 lead. Michael Lecomte (St. Hyacinthe, PQ/College Champlain Cougar), who assisted on the Minutemen's third goal, finished the scoring with a power play goal on a deflection with 3:52 left in the third period.

In addition to Davis, Chase Langeraap (Cayuga, ON/Oakville Blades) also had a multiple-point game, tallying two assists.

UMass returns to action on Friday night at Hockey East rival New Hampshire. The Engineers also play on Friday. They take on area-rival Union in the opening round of the Governor's Cup at the Times Union Center in Albany. Both games begin at 7pm.
