TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer men's soccer team recorded two second half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Hamilton College at Renwyck Field. With the win the Red Hawks improve to 11-4-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the Liberty League. The Continentals fall to 7-6-0 on the season, including a 2-5-0 mark in league play.
Junior Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) scored, what became the eventual game-winner on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Sophomore Blake Adams (Cedar Grove, NJ/Seton Hall Prepatory) was taken down in the box to draw the penalty. Field finished to the low left corner for his team-leading fifth marker of the season.
In the 70th minute, junior Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) beat his man up the left flank and served a cross into to Adams who slid in and tucked a shot inside the far post, putting the host Red Hawks up, 2-0.
The two sides played to a scoreless draw in the first half, with Rensselaer holding a slight 7-6 edge in shots. The Red Hawks were awarded two corner kicks to the Continentals one. Both schools finished with 16 shots on the afternoon. Hamilton was flagged for six offside calls compared to zero for RPI.
Field and Adams each had a team-high four shots to go along with their goals. Fleury and senior Tim Wisner (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburg) each had a pair shots. Hamilton was led offensive by the trio of Sam Dwyer (Califon, NJ/Union College), Max Akuamoah-Boatang (Winneba, Ghana/Nottingham) and Frank Campagnano (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) had four shots apiece.
Sophomore Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) stopped all six shots he faced to improve to 11-4-1 on the season. He now has eight shutouts to his credit. Continentals senior netminder Anthony Carello (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa Central) made three saves in defeat.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday for a non-league game at Alfred (4pm). Hamilton hosts SUNY-Geneseo on Saturday (12pm).
