Kevin Swift tallies two goals in Red Hawks, 5-0 victory over the Saxons

ALFRED, N.Y. – Junior Kevin Swift (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) scored two goals and three others tallied as the Rensselaer men's soccer team blanked Alfred, 5-0, in non-conference action on Wednesday. With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 12-4-1 on the season while the Saxons drop to 1-16-0.

Rensselaer opened the scoring just 3:45 in as Swift sent a header into the net off a corner kick. Senior Matt Hill (Hampton Falls, NH/Winnacunnet), who was credited with the assist on the first tally, added one of his own at the 27:29 mark.

Junior Michael Long (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) capped the scoring in the first half after he sent an unassisted tally in past goalie Elliot Thorpe at 38:49 to give RPI a 3-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Swift once again found the back of the net after he converted a pass from Hill at 54:31 for a four-goal advantage. Freshman Matt Koliopoulos (Franklin, MA/Franklin) rounded out the scoring at the 65:00 mark for the 5-0 final margin. Classmate Julian Coy (Bristow, VA/Brentsville District) was awarded the assist on the goal.

For the game, the Red Hawks dominated across the board, holding a 24-6 advantage in shots with a 10-1 advantage in corners.

In net for Rensselaer, sophomore Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) made two saves in 73:53 before giving way to freshman Alex Papageorgis (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), who also stopped two shots in his first career appearance in goal.

For Alfred, Thorpe made eight saves while Christopher Desouza stopped two shots in relief.

RPI returns to action on Saturday when it heads to Oneonta State for a 1pm match-up. Alfred is back on the pitch on Saturday with their regular season finale against St. John Fisher (7pm).
