TROY, N.Y. – Junior Eric Lampe had a goal and two assists to lead Quinnipiac University to a 5-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey contest at the Houston Field House. Quinnipiac improves to 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play while RPI drops to 3-7-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league play.
In addition to Lampe (Madison, WI/Chicago Steel), other multiple point scorers for the Bobcats were Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, SK/Vernon Vipers), who had two goals, including an empty-netter with less than four minutes to play, Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, MN/Sioux Falls), who had a goal and an assist, and Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, BC/Merritt), who had two assists in the win.
Hansen opened the scoring with one-timer from the point right point with the Bobcats skating on the power play. Lampe collected the puck after a wide shot by Matt Sorteberg (Anoka, MN/Anoka), hooked up with Leitch on the right flank, who passed to Hansen out in front of the right face-off circle. After Hansen passed back to Leitch, he received the puck after the defense committed to Leitch. Hansen's shot beat RPI's
Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) stick side for the lead.
Marshall scored at the 18:18 mark when the Bobcats, on the power play after RPI's sixth penalty of the first period, put a rush on Lange in net. Lampe received a pass from Sorteberg and put a shot on goal. Lange stopped Lampe's shot and then denied Marshall on two shots off the rebound. After it rolled out of Lange's pads, Marshall punched it home to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Quinnipiac took a 3-0 lead 4:15 into the second period. Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, CA/Sioux City) took a shot from the slot that was wide left. Mike Atkinson (Sparta, NJ/Vermont) collected the puck behind the net and rolled out to Lange's left. Atkinson then slipped a pass across the crease to Zurevinski, who banged home his one-timer for his second goal of the season.
At the 6:33 mark, Lampe scored his first goal of the season. Marshall won the face-off inside the Engineers' zone, sending the puck to Hansen. Hansen then fed Leitch, who gave it to Lampe streaking towards the net. After a fake to his left, Lampe went to his backhand and beat Lange off the crossbar to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
RPI got on the board at the 5:56 mark of the third period.
Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame Hounds) handled the puck in the left face-off circle before he found
Mark Zarbo (Grand Island, NY/Bentley) streaking to the goal from above the blue line. Zarbo took the pass in the slot and blasted home his first goal of the year. Quinnipiac added another goal at the 16:31 mark when Zurevinski scored on an empty net.
In goal Quinnipiac freshman Nick Pisellini (Itasca, IL/Chicago Steel) had 23 saves in the win to improve to 4-2-1. RPI's Lange finished with 26 saves while allowing four goals.
Rensselaer is idle next week and returns to action when it hosts its own holiday tournament – the oldest college hockey holiday tournament in the nation – on November 28-29. Quinnipiac plays next on Friday night when it travels to league foe Clarkson University.
