PAUL SMITH'S, N.Y. - Senior forward Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh) tallied 24 points to lead the Rensselaer men's basketball team to an 83-66 victory over Paul Smith's College on Sunday. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 2-2 on the season while the Bobcats drop to 0-6 overall.
The first half of action saw both teams jump out to a slow start. RPI shot just 36.1% from the field while Paul Smith's had a 36.7 percentage. The Red Hawks took a 31-25 lead into halftime.
In the second half of action, both squads found their groove as Rensselaer shot 53.8% from the field and 56.3% from the charity stripe to build up a solid lead. Despite shooting 50.0% in the second half, Paul Smith's found itself unable to overcome the deficit.
In addition to Simmons, who went 10 of 12 from the floor with four rebounds, RPI saw sophomore guard Travis Jones (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) pour in 10 points and a game-high four steals. Every player on the roster saw action for the Red Hawks with all but two of 15 players scoring a point or more.
For the Bobcats, four players finished in the double digits, led by a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds from senior Kingsly Ukwubiwe (Cambria Heights, NY). Sophomore Jeff Moore (Loudon, NH) added 12 points and 11 rebounds of his own while senior Tim Reil (Epsom, NH) had 14 points.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to the College of St. Joseph's (VT) for an 8pm tilt. They are back home on Thursday with a 6pm game against Southern Vermont before hosting Wentworth Insitute of Technology on Saturday at 3pm. Paul Smith's is in action on Wednesday when they travel to Green Mountain College for a 7:30pm game. They then host Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday (3pm).
