Men's Soccer Defeats Cornell College, 6-0

Red Hawks now 5-0 to open the season for the first time since 1968

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After scoring two first half goals, the Rensselaer men's soccer team broke open the game with four unanswered tallies in the second half to defeat Cornell College, 6-0. With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 5-0, while the Rams fall to 0-4.

Today's victory marks the first time since the 1968 season that the men's soccer team has opened the season, 5-0.

After opening goals from juniors Kevin Swift (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa) and Ben Russell (Rochester, NY/Penfield), the Red Hawks scored four in the second half, including three within a four minute span to take a 6-0 lead.

Freshman Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) started things off with a tally in the 53rd minute to give RPI the 3-0 advantage. Junior Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) was credited with the assist.

In the 80th minute, junior Luke Burton (Remsen, NY/Remsen) got the flurry started when he connected on a pass from freshman Alex Pagageoris (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) for the goal. Senior Mike Henzel (Niwot, CO/Niwot) made it a four-goal advantage in the 82nd minute before Pagageoris capped the Red Hawks scoring just over a minute later.

Red Hawks goalie Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport), a sophomore, did not have to make a save in the 75:16 minutes he played to pick up his fifth win of the season while senior Mike Prince (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) played 14:44 minutes with no saves.

Rams goalie Tyler Gough stopped 12 shots in the loss for Cornell, which was outshot, 29-1, in the game, including 18-0 on goal.

Cornell College will face Colorado College tomorrow afternoon at 1pm. Rensselaer returns to action on Sunday against the host Tigers (3pm). Live stats for the game will be available at http://www.coloradocollege.edu/webcasts/Athletics/msoccer/xlive.htm.
