SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Freshman forward Jordan Ward (Derry, NHPinkerton Academy) scored two goals with a game-high five shots and six other Red Hawks tallied once each as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) defeated John Jay, 8-1, at the Union College Men's Soccer Classic on Friday afternoon. RPI improves to 3-0 while the Bloodhounds lost their season opener.

The Red Hawks opened with three goals in the first half for a 3-0 lead.  Junior midfielder Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) broke the scoreless tie at 16:06 when he scored off a rebound from junior midfielder Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa). Tambasco added his second point of the afternoon at 18:29 when he found junior forward Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) at the right post. Prom one touched the ball into the open net.

Sophomore midfielder Jeff Herbert (Derry, NH/Pinkton Academy) put the finishing touches on the RPI-dominated half when he finished a cross from junior midfielder Ben Russell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) at 35:17.

RPI kept the momentum well into the second half. Junior midfielder Michael Long (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) put his team up 4-0 at 48:45 with a rocket from 25-yards out that beat the diving John Jay freshman goalkeeper, Chris Adao (Colonia, NJ).

Red Hawks sophomore forward Bryce Hutchinson (Elverson, PA/Twin Valley) tallied his team's fifth marker with a one-timer from 12 yards out.  Herbert set up the play.  After a score by freshman midfielder Matt Koliopouis (Franklin, MA/Franklin) made it 6-0 at 78:09, junior forward/midfielder Luke Burton (Remsen, NY/Remsen) dished out Ward's first goal at 79:22. Senior forward Christopher Tapia (Fresh Meadows, NY) scored the lone John Jay tally at 86:57 on an unassisted goal. Ward closed out the scoring, also unassisted, for RPI at 86:57.

RPI outshot John Jay, 25-6 in the game, and had an 8-2 advantage in corners. Bloodhound sophomore goalkeeper Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica), the second goalie of the day for John Jay, made all four saves, while sophomore Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) made both stops in the first half for the Red Hawks.

RPI faces Worcester State Saturday at 6pm following John Jay's game with host Union 3:30pm.
