Burgdoerfer and Cullen record three points apiece in victory over Tigers

PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Erik Burgdoerfer (East Setauket, NY/New York Apple Core) recorded two goals and an assist in leading the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over seventh-ranked Princeton, at Hobey Baker Rink. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-15-2 overall (3-5-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Tigers fall to 13-5-0 (8-4-0 ECACH).

Finishing with multiple points for RPI were freshman Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) with three assists, sophomore Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) with a goal and an assist, along with senior Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame) and sophomore Scott Halpern (Boca Raton, FL/Bay State Breakers) who each had a pair of helpers.

RPI freshman Josh Rabbani (Woodland Hills, CA/St. Louis Bandits) staked the visitors to an early lead, scoring just 1:22 into the first period. Cullen and Polacek earned the assists on Rabbani's fourth of the season.

Seven minutes later it was freshman Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) from his brother Matt Angers-Goulet and Burgdoerfer to give the Engineers a quick 2-0 advantage. The goal gave Angers-Goulet six points in his last four games.

RPI out-shot the Tigers 11-8 in the opening 20 minutes of play.

In the second, Rensselaer recorded another early goal, this time only 1:01 into the frame; Burgdoerfer notched the first of his two goals on the day, with assists going to Cullen and Halpern.

The Tigers answered with a power play goal at 8:09 of the second to pull within 3-1. Senior Lee Jubinville (Edmonton, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) tallied his fourth goal of the year from Taylor Fedun (Edmonton, AB/Spruce Grove Saints) and Jody Peterson (Smithers, BC/Fort McMurray Oil Barrons).

The Engineers took a 3-1 lead into the third period, despite being out-shot 11-4 in the second.

Polacek pushed the RPI advantage to 4-1 at 7:06 of the third stanza. Halpern and Cullen earned the helpers on Polacek's fifth goal of the season.

Rensselaer capped the scoring at 8:23 of the third, when Burgdoerfer scored his second of the game and third of the year. Matt-Angers-Goulet and junior Garett Vassel (Westhampton, NY/New York Apple Core) picked up assists on the Engineers' fifth goal.

Senior netminder Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) earned the victory for RPI making 26 saves, while Princeton goalie Alan Reynolds (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) had 19 stops.

The Engineers return to action next Friday and Saturday, when they host Colgate and eighth-ranked Cornell, respectively. Puck drop is set for 7pm on both nights.
