Box Score
TROY, N.Y. – The fifth-ranked Cornell University men's hockey team scored a goal in each period and junior goaltender Ben Scrivens (Spruce Grove, Alb.) stopped 22 shots en route to a 3-0 victory over home standing Rensselaer. With the win Cornell improves to 13-1-3 (8-0-2 ECACH) while the Engineers fall to 5-16-2 and 4-6-1 in ECAC Hockey.
The visiting Big Red wasted little time taking a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the first period. Junior Colin Greening (St. John's/Newfoundland) picked up the loose puck along the left wing boards, skated into the crease and slid a backhander under RPI senior goaltender
Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) for what proved to be the game-winner.
Cornell increased its advantage to two on a power play goal at 11:59 in the second frame. Greening came off the far wing and passed the puck to senior Evan Barlow (Strathmore, Alb.), who fired a point shot on goal. The puck deflected off sophomore Riley Nash (Kamloops, B.C.) and into the net for the tally.
Sophomore Patrick Kennedy (Dorchester, Ont.) made it a three-goal game for Cornell, adding its final marker at 12:58 in the third period. Senior Michael Kennedy (Dorchester, Ont.) chipped the puck to sophomore Tyler Roeszler (Chatham, Ont.) along the left circle, and he sent it to Patrick in the slot, who rifled a shot past Lange.
Scrivens (13-1-1) earned his fifth shutout of the year, while Lange (5-16-2) made 16 stops for RPI.
The Engineers are on the road next weekend, taking on St. Lawrence University and Clarkson University on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Cornell travels to Ithaca, N.Y. tomorrow night to play Union College. All games are scheduled for 7pm.
