NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Powered by a pair of first half goals, the Rensselaer men's soccer team defeated New Paltz, 2-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday. The seventh-ranked Engineers improve to 12-1-2 with the win, while the Hawks drop to 7-10-2 on the season.

Rensselaer got on the scoreboard just 1:19 into the game on Tom Kelly's (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School) first assist of the season. Kelly's corner found Brad Shelofsky (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) for the header at the six yard box for his first goal of the season and the first of his career.

The Engineers continued to dominate and grabbed a two-goal advantage in the 9th minute off senior captain Lincoln Field's (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) sixth goal of the season. Field gave the visitors the 2-0 lead after converting his fourth penalty kick of the year in six opportunities.

After falling behind 2-0, the Hawks gained momentum and had a chance to get on the board in the 19th minute, after Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa/Massapequa) played a through ball to Dave Gardiner (Malta/Ballston Spa) whose shot was saved by the diving Engineer keeper. Seconds later, Nick DiPaola's (Huntington/Huntington) cross from the right corner was covered up by Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) to stop the Hawks attack.

RPI had a chance to increase the lead to three, but Tom Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) made a great save on a shot from Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) from 15 yards out.

DiPaola pulled the Hawks to within a goal (2-1), when his shot from 25 yards out sailed over the Penny's head into the top left corner for his fourth goal of the season.

With two minutes to go, DiPaola's header off Jason Fancies' (Ossining/Ossining) throw in was bobbled by Penny but quickly scooped up before Altadonna could get a touch on it. The Hawks outshot the Engineers 13-7 in the game.

Penny made eight saves for his 11th win of the season, while Viscardi stopped three shots and falls to 2-5-1 on the season.

New Paltz concluded its regular season in today's match.  Rensselaer closes out its regular season on Saturday at Liberty League rival Vassar (2pm).
