TROY, N.Y. – Freshman netminder Keith Kinkaid (Farmingville, NY/St. Louis Bandits) stopped all 30 shots he faced, including three unofficial shots in a shootout, as the Union men's hockey team advanced in the 59th RPI Invitational with a 0-0 tie and shootout win over Lake Superior State, this afternoon at the Houston Field House. Officially a draw, the Dutchmen move to 5-3-4 overall, while the Lakers are now 6-7-2.
LSSU freshman goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson (West Roxbury, MA) also made 30 saves to earn the shutout.
In the shootout, Union senior Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, PQ/Northwood School) scored five-hole for the lone tally of the shootout for either team.
After the contest went scoreless over 60 minutes, Kinkaid and Mahoney-Wilson each made big saves to preserve their respective shutouts, late in 5-minute overtime. Kinkaid denied Lakers freshman Domenic Monardo (Oakville, ON) and senior John Scrymgeour (Pickering, ON) on back-to-back shots, before sophomore Kyle Haines (Weyburn, SA) pushed the puck wide of the left post.
The Dutchmen were unable to connect on the first scoring chance of the game, when sophomore Brian Yanovitch (Mansfield, MA/Bridgewater Bandits) was denied by Mohoney-Wilson from the low slot just six minutes into the game. The Lakers had an opportunity to the take the lead late in the opening frame, but senior Pat Aubry (Ottawa, ON) was stuffed on the doorstep. Neither team was able to capitalize on single power-play opportunities.
In the second period, Union had a 2-on-1 chance come up short when junior Justin Pallos (Glastonbury, CT/Boston Junior Bruins) carried the puck into the zone and tried to center a pass to Jason Shaffer (Eagle River, AK/Trail Smoke Eaters), who was tied up and couldn't get a shot away.
Lake Superior State senior defenseman Simon Gysbers (Richmond Hill, ON) was stopped on a break 9:45 into the second frame. A big rebound was also fired on goal, but Kinkaid snuffed out that chance as well.
Union senior Jon Lareau (Plainville, MA/Boston Junior Bruins) ripped a one-timer from between the circles with less than a minute to play in the second, but Mohoney-Wilson made a kick-save into the far corner.
A Lakers turnover in their own zone led to a late chance for Shaffer, but his turnaround shot from the slot went wide-left. After a scoreless third period, the game went into overtime.
In the extra frame, Union junior Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, AB/Powell River Kings) had his wrap-around try stuffed at the left post, and freshman Jeremy Welsh's (Bayfield, ON/Oakville Blades) shot off the rebound was smothered by Mahoney-Wilson.
Union will play the winner of the Rensselaer/Bentley game, tomorrow at either 4pm or 7pm, while Lake Superior State will the play the loser of the late game. The Engineers will play at 7pm no matter the outcome of their contest.
