TROY, N.Y. – Four different players scored and Yale University allowed just 15 shots on goal on its way to defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-1, in front of a sold out crowd of 4,780 in the 32nd Annual Big Red Freakout! at Houston Field House.
With the win the Bulldogs – ranked tenth nationally and in first place in ECAC Hockey – have now won eight straight games to improve to 19-6-1 overall and 14-3-1 in the league. The Engineers move to 7-21-2 and 6-10-1.
Yale opened a 1-0 lead at 13:24 of the first period when junior Chris Cahill (Haverhill, MA) stole the puck and dished it to Marc Arcobello (Milford, CT), who snapped off a wrist shot from the blue line that found the upper left corner of the net.
The Bulldogs made it a two-goal lead at 2:26 of the second period when Charles Brockett (Shaker Heights, OH) picked up a loose puck off the right side boards and slid a pass to Patrick Brosnihan (Worcester, MA), who scored what proved to be the game-winning goal from the left faceoff circle.
The Engineers pulled to within one goal late in the stanza when freshman
Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) collected a nifty backhanded pass from defenseman
Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angels), who was below the goal line, and scored with 1:02 remaining in the period.
Yale's Denny Kearney (Hanover, NH) put the visitors back ahead by two goals at 2:55 of the third period when he stuffed in a rebound of a Broc Little (Rindge, NH) shot from the right post for a 3-1 lead.
Bulldogs' sophomore Jeff Anderson (Port Coquitlam, BC) added an empty netter with 19 seconds to play to bring the game to its final margin. Junior Ryan Donald (St. Albert, AB) earned the lone helper.
Senior netminder Alec Richards (Robbinsdale, MN) made 15 saves to earn the victory for Yale, while senior
Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) made 26 stops for the Engineers.
Rensselaer returns to action on Friday night at Cornell. The Bulldogs play at Quinnipiac next Friday. Both games are ECAC Hockey games that begin at 7pm.
