Special Teams Lifts Union Over Men's Hockey, 3-0

Dutchmen score three power play goals in win

Box Score

TROY, N.Y. – Corey Milan stopped all 31 shots he faced and defenseman Lane Caffaro had a goal and two assists – all on the power play – to lead Union College to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey game at the Houston Field House.

Milan (Great Barrington, MA/Penticton Vees), a sophomore, made 12 saves in the first period, 13 in the second and six in the third in posting his first shutout of the season and second of his career.

Following a scoreless first period in which Union killed off three RPI power plays, the Dutchmen took advantage of its power play opportunities, scoring three extra-man goals in the second period for a 3-0 lead after two.

Caffaro (Slave Lake, AB/Ft. McMurray Oil Barons), a senior, scored on a slap shot from the left circle at 6:17 with the Dutchmen on a 5-on-3 advantage. Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON/Pembroke Lumber Kings) and fellow defenseman Brendan Milnamow (Wilton, CT/Taft School) earned the assists, setting up Caffaro with precision passing. Sophomore Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, AB/Powell River Kings) doubled the lead when he scored on his own rebound from just outside the crease at 7:54. Cook and Caffaro had the helpers on the goal, Presizniuk's team-leading 12th of the season. Junior Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, PQ/Northwood School) made it 3-0 when his shot from the left circle with Union on a 5-on-3 power play found the top of the net. Caffaro and Milnamow (Wilton, CT/Taft School) had the assists on the goal, which was another that featured crisp passing by the Dutchmen.

With the win, Union improves to 13-12-2 overall and 6-8-1 in ECAC Hockey. RPI, which got 14 saves from senior Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core), falls to 6-19-2 and 5-9-1 and drops two points behind the Dutchmen in the standings.

The Engineers outshot the Dutchmen, 31-17. Union finished 3 for 7 on the power play while RPI was 0 for 5.

The game was the first of two on the weekend between the Engineers and Dutchmen, who meet on Saturday night in Schenectady at 7pm.
