WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Junior attack Whitney Thayer tallied a game-high five goals to lead Williams College past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 13-6, in non-conference action on Tuesday. The Ephs improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Red Hawks drop to 3-1.

Thayer (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day), who also added two assists, gave Williams a 2-1 advantage at the 26:18 mark just minutes after RPI's Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Colombia) kicked off the scoring in the game.

The homestanding Ephs led by as many as four (6-2) with 4:13 remaining in the opening half before Red Hawks midfielder Whitney Kukol (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored unassisted at 3:54 to cut the deficit to 6-3. Less than a minute remained in the half as Williams' senior Britt Spackman (Newton, MA/Newton North) added a goal off an assist by Thayer to make it a 7-3 advantage after the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, the Ephs continued to gain momentum, scoring three straight goals, including Thayer's fifth of the game to take a 10-3 lead with 22:13 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) cut the Red Hawks deficit to six (10-4), but could not contain the Williams offense, which tallied three straight goals for a 13-4 lead with just under nine minutes remaining.

RPI tried to make a comeback in the waning minutes as junior Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) and Caouette added goals, but it wasn't enough.

In addition to Thayer, the Ephs saw Spackman add two goals and two assists. Julie Nawrocki (Winchester, UK/St. Swithun's School) posted two goals and an assist while Anne Marie Burke (Lower Merion, PA/Lower Merion) added two goals.

Sophomore goalie Julia Schrieber (Cockeysville, MD/McDonogh School) picked up the win, stopping six shots before giving way to freshman Kate Foley (Billerica, MA/Phillips Andover Academy), who did not have any saves.

For Rensselaer, Caouette had two goals and an assist while Fennessey added two goals. Marshall added a goal and an assist while junior netminder Ariana Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill) posted 12 saves in the loss.

Williams held a 35-21 advantage in shots and led 19-13 in ground balls.

RPI returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Nazareth (2:30pm). Williams is also in action on Saturday with a conference game at Tufts (12pm).
