TROY, N.Y. – Junior Alyssa Brook did not allow a run while giving up just four hits with 12 strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work to earn the victory in both games as the Ithaca College softball team swept a non-league doubleheader from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 7-0 & 3-2, at Doris Robison Field.
Brook (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) allowed just one hit with eight strikeouts in a complete game effort in game one. She then pitched the final four innings of the second game, giving up three hits with four strikeouts. The righthander did not walk a batter all afternoon.
Offensively, the Bombers were led by sophomore outfielder Brittany Lillie (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), who had two hits in both games, including a two-run home run, while also scoring three runs and knocking in four.
In the opener, Ithaca scored three runs in the third inning, one in the sixth and three in the third for the win. Annmarie Forenza (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led a 15-hit attack by going 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI. Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) suffered the loss in the circle after allowing four earned runs and 11 hits – 10 singles – in 5.1 innings.
RPI struck first in the second game, scoring a run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Finkbeiner opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third base on a sacrifice and came home on a single by sophomore
Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy).
The Bombers came right back with three runs in the second inning, highlighted by Lillie's home run and an RBI triple by Forenza. The homestanding Red Hawks pulled to within one run in the third inning on an RBI single by
Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) but they could not tie the game.
Lillie had two of Ithaca's six hits, while also chipping in with a run and two runs batted in. Freshman
Kelly Erkert (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) went 3 for 3 with a run for RPI, which saw Bach collect two hits. Sophomore
Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) took the loss in a complete game effort.
Rensselaer returns to action on Monday when it hosts Castleton State in a doubleheader beginning at 3pm. RPI is also home for doubleheaders on Tuesday (Russell Sage) and Wednesday (Mount Saint Mary), also beginning at 3pm.
Ithaca is scheduled to host Rochester in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1pm.
