FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Rensselaer softball team opened the 2009 season with an 11-7 victory over Drew University before losing its second game of the day, 4-3 to Wheaton College. Sophomore
Jen Bach led the Red Hawks with a win and four hits on the day.
In the opener, Bach (Lansdale, PA / Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and senior
Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY / Ellenville) both went 3 for 5 to help the Red Hawks down the Rangers. Bach had a double, a run scored and two runs batted in, while Finkbeiner also had a two-base hit and a run scored. She knocked in one run in the game, which RPI led the whole way. Sophomore
Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY / Seaford) went 3 for 3 with a run scored and two batted in.
Senior Michele Street (E. Syracuse, NY / E. Syracuse-Minoa) started the game, striking out three batters in 2.2 innings. Bach allowed just one run on four hits in the next three innings to earn the win. Sophomore
Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH / Gilford) struck out four in the final 2.1 innings.
In RPI's second game, Bach had a two-run home run and
Becky Bailey (Rome, NY / Holland Patent) had two hits but it was not enough as RPI fell to Wheaton, 4-3. Bua suffered the loss after giving up seven hits and four runs in 5.0 innings. Finkbeiner pitched one inning, allowing no hits with a strikeout.
