TROY, N.Y. – Led by seven goals from the senior class and 14 saves from junior netminder
Ariana Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team defeated St. Lawrence University, 11-5 on senior day at Renwyck Field. With the victory, the Red Hawks move to 6-5 on the season and are now 3-3 in the Liberty League. The Saints drop to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Rensselaer opened the game's scoring as senior midfielder
Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) tallied off a feed from rookie
Kerrie Cahalin (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) at 28:36. The visiting Saints answered right back as junior midfielder Julie Wooters (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) put one past Hood with 26:38 left in the first half.
Clark gave Rensselaer the lead for good a little over a minute later after she converted a
Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) pass for a 2-1 lead. The Red Hawks continued to press, building up a 4-1 lead with 18:19 remaining but St. Lawrence answered on goals by sophomore Kim Cooper (Wolfeboro, NH/Brewster Academy) and classmate Kelsey Redpath (Norwich, VT/Hanover) to cut the deficit to 4-3 at 14:28.
Senior
Emily Donowick (West Seneca, NY/Nichols School) scored minutes later to make it a two-goal advantage (5-3) for the Red Hawks, heading into the intermission. Hood, who recorded 11 saves through the first half came up with a number of key stops to keep Rensselaer into the game, including several point-blank saves mid-way through the frame.
Rensselaer continued to build its lead in the second frame, scoring three straight goals, including tallies by seniors Clark and Donowick to push the lead to 8-3 within the first eight minutes of the half. Wooters tallied to cut the score back to 8-4 with just over 10 minutes to play, but momentum continued to swing in the Red Hawks favor as they scored three straight for a seven-goal lead (11-4) with 5:55 remaining.
In addition to Clark, who had a game-best four goals, Rensselaer saw sophomore
Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) add two goals and an assist. Donowick finished with two goals and a helper while senior
Carly Mahony (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet Regional) had a goal and an assist.
For St. Lawrence, Wooters added two goals while Redpath, Cooper and Liz Fagan (Madison, CT/Loomis Chaffee). In goal for the Saints, sophomore Anna Marchand (Concord, MA/Middlesex School) made eight stops in the loss.
RPI returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Vassar for a 2pm game in Poughkeepsie. St. Lawrence hosts Union and Skidmore on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively.
