TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Jen Bach pitched a complete game one hitter and collected four hits with three runs and five runs batted in to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a doubleheader sweep of Castleton State, 10-0 and 9-0, in non-league action at Doris Robison Field.

RPI, which won the first game in five innings and the second in six, improves to 16-4, including eight straight victories. The visiting Spartans fall to 7-9.

Bach (Landsdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) was the catalyst in the first game, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. At the plate she was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI.

The Red Hawks opened the scoring with a four-run first inning on four hits, including a two-run single by Bach and a two-run home run to left centerfield by senior catcher Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor). RPI added two runs in the second inning, one in the third and three in the fourth inning – highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY/Seaford) – for the win.

In addition to Bach, others with multiple hits were junior second baseman Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Holland Patent), who was 3 for 3 with two runs, and sophomore shortstop Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland), who was 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Castleton pitcher Tosha Whittemore (Bridgport, VT/Middlebury Union) had the only hit for the Spartans, a single in the third inning. From the circle she allowed 10 runs on 10 hits with four walks and a strikeout.

In the second game, RPI held a 1-0 lead after the second inning and a 5-0 advantage after three. The Red Hawks added a single run in the fifth and ended the game with a three-run sixth inning.

Bach was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBI, while senior centerfielder Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) and freshman catcher Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) also had two hits apiece. Finkbeiner added two runs and Heller, who had a double, collected two runs and a pair of runs batted in. Sophomore Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) earned the win by striking out 12 and walking just one to improve to 6-3.

Junior second baseman Alicia Zraunig (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield) had two of Castleton's five hits, both singles. Junior Hilary Bemis (Crown Point, NY/Crown Point) gave up 10 hits and nine runs, eight earned, with five walks and two strikeouts in the loss.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday at St. Lawrence (1pm). Castleton State hosts SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday at 3pm.
