POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The women's tennis team competed in the Liberty League Championship at Vassar College and Rensselaer dropped both matches to finish in sixth place in the event. RPI, the sixth seed, was defeated by #3 St. Lawrence, 9-0, in the opening round and then lost to #5 Union, 7-2.
In the match with the Saints of St. Lawrence, the No. 3 doubles spot featured the closest match, with SLU's Barry Edgar (Darien, CT/Darien) and Chelsea Hubbell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) holding an 8-5 advantage over Rensselaer's
Kimberly Viles (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and
Krisha Subramanian (Niskayuna, NY/Academy of the Holy Names). Every singles match went to St. Lawrence in straight sets.
Later in the day, Union took home fifth place after defeating RPI. The Dutchwomen swept through doubles play, with Kathleen Rucci (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) and Brittany Miller (Scituate, MA/Scituate) edging the RPI duo of
Progga Das (Orangeburg, NY/Tappan Zee) and
Cora Wigen (Thousand Oaks, CA/Annie Wright), 9-7, in the No. 1 doubles match. Das and Wigen were accountable for the Red Hawks' wins on the day, at the No. 1 and 3 singles spots, respectively. At No. 5 singles, Lyndsay Wehrum (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) gave Union a hard-fought tiebreaker win (6-0, 5-7, 10-5).
