Women's Tennis Wraps Fall Slate at ITA Regionals

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Gauri Muliyil advanced to the singles quarterfinals to highlight the RPI women's tennis team's four-day showing at the ITA Northeast Regional, hosted by Skidmore from Thursday through Sunday at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.

Muliyil put together a three-match winning streak in the championship singles draw. She opened the tournament by rallying from a set down against Manasi Bedi of Hamilton, taking the second set 6-2 before earning a 10-4 victory in the deciding match tiebreak for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 win in the round of 64.

The RPI standout followed with another comeback in the round of 32 against Skidmore's Nandini Chandra. After dropping the opening set 7-5, Muliyil responded with a 6-1 second-set victory and secured the match with a 10-5 tiebreak. She then moved into the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 victory over Vassar's Maddie Kirby.

Muliyil's singles run concluded in the quarterfinals against Victoria Wang of NYU. Muliyil claimed the opening set 6-3 before Wang rallied to take the final two sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Muliyil finished championship singles competition with a 3-1 record.

Victoria Sarabosing and Anushka Jaiswal also recorded opening-round victories for the Engineers. Sarabosing earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Skidmore's Kendall Olivas before falling to Helena Lynn of St. Francis, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32. Jaiswal advanced with a three-set victory against Vassar's Ona Pingitore Espelt, winning 6-2, 0-6, 10-8, before a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) setback against Yvette Karera of St. Lawrence in the next round.

Juliette Ceas and Kayla Wheeler rounded out RPI's championship singles entries. Ceas won the opening set of her round-of-64 match before Noel Allen of Rochester rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-2 victory, while Wheeler fell to Vassar's Sieun Lee, 6-3, 6-3.

RPI also had two tandems compete in the championship doubles draw. Muliyil teamed with Ceas in the round of 64, where the Engineers battled Ashley Petrauskas and Katelyn Ho before falling by an 8-5 score. Jaiswal and Wheeler also competed in the opening round and were defeated 8-5 by Zoey Albert and Shruti Mannan.
