SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The RPI women's tennis team completed two days of competition at the Skidmore Invitational this weekend, with the Engineers earning five singles victories on Saturday before both RPI doubles pairings closed the event with wins on Sunday.
Gauri Muliyil led the Engineers during Saturday's three rounds of singles competition, posting a 2-1 record. Muliyil opened her weekend with a tightly contested 8-7 victory, dominating the tiebreaker by a 7-0 margin. She followed with another strong performance in the second round, taking the opening set in a tiebreaker before completing a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 victory. Muliyil's unbeaten start came to an end in the final round with an 8-3 setback.
Juliette Ceas also started the tournament in the win column, earning an 8-2 victory in her first singles match of the weekend. Ceas was then defeated 6-0, 6-3 in the second round before concluding Saturday's competition with an 8-1 setback.
Victoria Sarabosing rebounded from an 8-3 defeat in her opening match to earn a straight-set victory in the second round. Sarabosing took the match 6-3, 6-4 for her first victory of the weekend. She returned for the third round before her final singles contest ended with a retirement after she dropped the opening set, 6-1.
Kayla Wheeler finished her singles day on a high note after dropping her first two contests. Wheeler was defeated 8-3 in the opening round and 6-2, 6-1 in the second before responding with an 8-4 victory in her final match of the afternoon.
The tournament shifted to doubles competition on Sunday, with Muliyil teaming with Ceas and Wheeler pairing with Sarabosing for three rounds of play.
Muliyil and Ceas dropped an 8-2 decision in their first match before falling 6-2 in the second round. The duo responded in its final appearance of the weekend, turning in its strongest result of the day with a 6-1 victory.
Wheeler and Sarabosing followed a similar path, falling 8-4 in their opening contest and 6-2 in the second round before closing the tournament with a dramatic victory. The RPI tandem went the distance in the final doubles match and prevailed 8-7, taking the deciding tiebreaker by an 8-6 margin.
RPI finished the two-day event with five victories across 12 singles matches and two wins in six doubles contests. Muliyil led the Engineers with two singles victories, while Wheeler, Sarabosing and Ceas each added a singles win. Both RPI doubles combinations finished the weekend with victories in their final matches.
