SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sophomore
Jen Bach had two hits and earned the win to lead the Rensselaer softball team to a 7-4 win over Union in the first game of a Liberty League doubleheader at Alexander Field. The Dutchwomen came back to win the second game, 9-0 in six innings, to earn the split.
Rensselaer is now 22-11 overall and 3-3 in the league, while Union is 26-6 and 3-3.
In game one, Bach (Landsdale, PA/Gwynned Mercy Academy) gave up eight hits and four runs, all earned, while striking out one, to improve to 7-2. She also had two hits, a run and an RBI. Sophomore
Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) allowed just two hits in 2.2 innings for the save.
Union pitcher Ginni Sack (Burnt Hills, NY) allowed seven runs but only three earned as the Dutchwomen had four errors. Three of Union's errors came in the fourth, when the Red Hawks scored four runs to erase a 2-1 Union lead. She struck out three and gave up 10 hits.
Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) and
Kelly Erkert (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) both added two hits each for RPI. Union was led by Ashley Kovack (Ridgefield, CT), who finished with two hits and two RBI.
The second game saw Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY) connect on two homers and five RBIs and Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville) pitched a three-hit shutout as Union earned the split.
Ippoliti gave up just three singles and struck out two to win her 10th game against just two losses. Kaknis hit her sixth and seventh homers of the season. Her first was a three-run shot in the first inning. The second home run was a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth that came with two outs. Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) and Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY) had two hits each.
Bua allowed three earned runs and took the loss to fall to 8-6 for RPI, which saw Finkbeiner pick up a hit.
